We are all familiar with the term BMI (Body Mass Index). This is a calculation that shows whether you are a healthy weight based on age, weight and height. But have you ever heard of the BMR? This tool shows you how many calories your body needs based on your lifestyle.

WHAT DOES BMR MEAN?

BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate, also known as metabolic rate. Our body needs a certain number of calories to be able to carry out respiration, heart rate, body temperature, but also cell production (eg muscles), protein synthesis (eg hair) and the regulation of nutrients. With the BMR method you calculate the total number of calories that your body needs without being active. So we need this number at least on a daily basis.

BMR CALCULATE

Calculating your BMR is not very easy. The Harris and Benedict method is the best known and most used, where your age, weight, height and gender are decisive.

Calculation for men: 66.4730 + (13.7516 x weight in kg) + (5.0033 x body height in cm) – (6.7550 x age in years).

Calculation for women: 655.0955 + (9.5634 x weight in kg) + (1.8496 x body height in cm) – (4.6756 x age in years). Do you exert yourself by, for example, walking, training on a fitness machine or by doing the household? Then your body naturally needs more calories.
